VETERAN punk-pop outfit Blondie have tweeted their disapproval for the Sochi Olympics, revealing that they passed on an offer to play at the Games on human rights grounds.
The Heart Of Glass hitmakers, led by 68-year-old frontwoman Deborah Harry, join other gay-friendly acts such as Cher, Madonna and Lady Gaga in voicing their objections to the games, given Russia's controversial anti-gay laws.
The group took to their Twitter and Facebook pages, sharing the details of an offer to perform at the Red Rocks Festival in Sochi next week, as part of the Winter Olympics.
The offer was to play a 45-minute set after an Olympics medal ceremony, to an audience of up to 25,000 people. For Blondie, though, there was only one response:
The 2014 Winter Olympics kicked off in Sochi last night with a colourful opening ceremony, including a performance by one group clearly not so troubled by Russia's stance on gay rights. Russian pop duo t.A.T.u, who briefly achieved international success in 2002 thanks to their racy lesbian-themed image (later revealed to be nothing but a marketing stunt), performed their early hit Not Gonna Get Us at the ceremony, as a bemused Vladimir Putin watched on.
