Drug Overdose Is Only Tragic When It Happens to a Rich White Celebrity

"Glee" star Corey Monteith's drug death was a mainstream media tragedy, while lesser known DeAndre McCullough was dubbed a drug abuser.

The death of 31-year-old "Glee" star Corey Monteith shocked millions of fans around the world and produced a torrent of articles examining his life and death. Monteith overdosed on a combination of heroin and alcohol.
The mainstream media treats the overdose deaths of young, white, rich celebrities in the prime of their lives as a tragedy, not something they brought on themselves or are responsible for. The British Columbia Coroners Service immediatel yreleased a statement saying, "There is absolutely nothing at this point, no evidence to suggest this is anything but the most sad and tragic accident."
No articles referred to Monteith as a junkie, dope fiend, addict, drug abuser or criminal. Journalists wrote with sympathy about his troubled teen years and his struggles with addiction starting at age 13.
Last year another young actor, less well known than Monteith, died from an overdose of heroin. His name was DeAndre McCullough and he played bit roles in David Simon’s “The Wire” and “The Corner.” McCullough, who was black, started dealing and using drugs at the age of 15 on the streets and corners of Baltimore. Simon and co-writer Edward Burns chronicled McCullough’s turbulent world in their book, The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood. But press accounts of McCullough’s death didn’t describe it as tragic. One headlineread, “DeAndre McCullough, Drug Dealer Who Inspired ‘The Corner,’ Dies at 35,” and another proclaimed, “A Better Life Eternally Eluded the Boy From ‘The Corner.’”
Most articles frontloaded McCullough’s past as a drug dealer, saying that he, like his mother and father, was an “abuser of cocaine and heroin,” and that just before his death warrants were out for his arrest.
Cory Monteith’s overdose death was portrayed as a profound loss that could and should have been prevented. McCullough’s death was discussed as inevitable after a long struggle with an “addiction that won out” or as another account put it, “a demon inside of him that he couldn’t get rid of.” A prominent piece in the New York Times ended by declaring, “His addiction had finally swallowed him whole.”
The lives of McCullough and Monteith were oceans apart and show in black and white how race and class impact addiction. Most likely, Monteith had someone buy heroin for him, which allowed the well-known actor to avoid the violence of the world of illegal drugs and evade the risk of arrest, as well as all the other negative, life-long consequences of a felony drug conviction. His pay for "Glee" was between $30K and $50K per episode, and with personal appearances and endorsements, Monteith was a millionaire.
When Monteith was ready to enter a drug rehabilitation program he could get in right away: No waiting lists for celebrities with cash. The war on drugs dragnet would not capture Monteith.
It was not so for McCullough. At every point his addiction was criminalized and punished. He had to score drugs the way the poor do—hustling on the streets, dealing drugs and constantly dodging beatings or bullets. Passages in The Corner describe how McCullough used his drugs in alleyways, abandoned buildings, and in shooting galleries, not in private, $500-a-night rooms at luxury hotels like Monteith did. Most likely, McCullough was uninsured, so if he wanted treatment he would have waited on a list for months. And the drug warriors who occupied his corner trained their guns on his bombed-out netherworld and eventually caught him.
Racism, poverty and the criminalization of drug use set McCullough up to sell, use and to die from a heroin overdose. The 35-year-old who didn’t think he’d make it past the age of 20 belongs to the most demonized, despised and disposable demographic in America: poor, black, male and addicted.

Who Gives a Shit About Miley Cyrus?

At first it might seem almost impossible to justify a story about Miley Cyrus’ performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on a site dedicated to all things politics, but it doesn’t take long to find a suitable angle when you compare how much outrage Cyrus’ sexually-charged and outlandishly costumed performance with how much outrage will not be sparked over finally getting confirmation that we helped Saddam Hussein as he was gassing Iranians back under the First Bush presidency. I woke up this morning with my Facebook and other social media feeds loaded with “WTF, MILEY CYRUS?!” headlines. So I too said, “What the fuck, Miley Cyrus,” as I clicked on the video replay of her performance.
Okay, let’s start with the obvious. It was sexually charged. She was dancing suggestively and she had what looked like the pelt of Chuck E. Cheese sewn into a revealing and tight-fitting outfit. So we can probably put it in the “bizarre” category. Hell, I’ll so far as to call it “over the top,” but only because it’s always been my experience that “over the top” is not always a bad thing. Here’s the truth though — Cyrus is an entertainer. She can’t afford to do the same puppy-dogs and ice cream routine she did at first because it won’t be believable anymore. She doesn’t look twelve, and I personally would find it a million times creepier to see a twenty-something dressed as a teenager and acting accordingly. That to me is pervy beyond all belief. Miley trying to do whatever teen idol has tried to do before — stop being a teen idol and still have a career — is nothing new.
The very last thing I’m going to write about Miley’s performance is this — she’s 20 years old for fuck’s sake. She’s not twelve anymore, and while I know her initial entry into showbiz was as a precocious little girl, but girls grow up. If you don’t want your daughter growing up, too bad. She’s going to. And she may end up wanting to emulate this phase of Miley’s career too. If you don’t like her performance from last night, that’s fine. You’re entitled to your subjective opinion on her art. All I’m asking is you have just a little perspective.
You see, at the same time that America was getting its collective jaw knocked to the floor by a young woman proclaiming her sexuality and creativity however-the-hell she felt like, plans of war in Syria were being made. How many of you heard from your news outlets this weekend about Senator Bob Corker all but assuring us action is imminent in Syria? Look, I get it. Politics is serious business and it’s depressing enough to where even as someone who devotes a good chunk of their time following it, I get burned out too. However, do you know how many more “WHAT THE FUCK?! BURN AFFLORCK IZ NEW BATMAN?!?” posts I saw even as we were learning that our government was putting Chelsea Manning away for exposing war crimes?
If you found yourself more repulsed by Miley Cyrus putting her hand in her crotch than you were by the reaction from even some on the left to Manning’s verdict and subsequent request for hormone treatments, you are in need of a serious priority check. Honestly, you’re already watching the MTV Video Music Awards — a show about music videos on a channel that shows no music videos. You are literally watching the most dumbed-down entertainment on the planet and you’re going to freak out like some puritanical school marm because an of-age woman gyrated and danced provocatively?
The last time I checked, Gitmo is still open, AIDS doesn’t have a cure, income inequality is getting worse by the day, we are sorely behind in education, renewable energy production and we have  a political party in this country trying to shut the government down rather than help 30 million more people get health insurance. Since 20 kids under the age of nine were slayed back in December, more Americans have been gunned down here at home than soldiers killed in Afghanistan. All of these things take precedence over Miley Fucking Cyrus. I know, it’s really easy to just fire up the computer and bang away at the keys and tell everyone, “stop caring about this dumb shit,” but that’s exactly what needs to happen in this country. We need to stop caring about this shit.
If I’m sounding overly harsh, it’s because there’s an easy solution to the Miley Cyrus problem — don’t watch it and don’t let your kids watch it. There isn’t an easy solution to the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act. There isn’t an easy solution to get our government — Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Green Party, all of them — off the corporate teat completely. There aren’t easy solutions to repairing our broken infrastructure all over the country. There aren’t easy solutions to any of these problems, but I have to wonder how much easier we’d find solutions if we weren’t always so up-in-arms about what a paid attention whore doing what she does best — garnering attention — and were more up in arms about the people whose salaries we all literally pay running roughshod over us.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You of course can be outraged about Ms. Cyrus’ performance and the fact that we’re still incarcerating a disproportionate number of young black males because we’re too chicken-shit to be bold and legalize marijuana. You can be angry about Miley’s brief, fleeting moment of overt and extroverted sexuality and also appalled about secret courts making secret ruling that allow our government to kill without due process. I’m just suggesting that you adjust the ratios of outrage accordingly.
If it meant real judicial oversight of all drone strikes, I’d take a thousand Chuck E. Cheez stripper dances. If it meant reinstalling Glass-Steagall, I wouldn’t care if Miley blew Kermit the Frog on stage in front of an audience there to see “Les Miserable” instead. When we get to the point where atrocities aren’t being carried out both internationally and domestically in the name of corporate profit and America’s inane puritanical ethics, then you’ll find me at the top of the mountain screaming about when Celebutante X goes too far.

Khloe Kardashian & Lamar Odom marriage is in trouble: By bina@binafink.com

Bina Fink
Khloe & Lamar's marriage is in serious trouble, and the reason is Lamar's  drug abuse.

Lamar has had a problem for 2 years.  It's so bad,  that last August Khloe gave Lamar an ultimatum to go to rehab.  Lamar went to a rehab center in San Diego, but he was so resistant Khloe hired private investigators to secretly stand guard at the rehab place to make sure he didn't leave, but after three weeks, Lamar left the center.

Lamar was clean for a while he played really good the past season with the Clippers, but when the season was over, Lamar started to use drugs again.
The situation is so bad, that the whole family is trying to convince Lamar to go to rehab and Khloe is very concerned about saving Lamar's life putting rumors aside that Lamar was cheating.

The  L.A. County District Attorney is an African-American woman, so we don't understand why Chris is stating that the D.A is a racist.

Catapult’s leader, who lives near Newtown, and his group touchingly acted out the story of a child’s life.
Tuesday’s “America’s Got Talent” quarterfinals came to a moving close with Catapult Entertainment.
The shadow dancers — who perform behind a screen using their silhouettes to tell stories — paid tribute to the lives lost in December’s massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Howie Mandel pointed out that producers scheduled Catapult to perform last, and said they were smart to do so, explaining, “I promise you, there isn’t anybody that has been on this stage that could follow you.”

“To see the circle of life that these children who we lost in Connecticut will never have and you depicted it,” he continued, “It’s just amazing. It is amazing. I have no words.”

“You guys are on a different level of imagination.bina@binafink.com It is so beautiful to watch what you guys do behind that screen,” said Heidi Klum afterward, adding, “This is the best act of tonight. I love it.” Mel B
told the dancers, “This really was a true celebration of life. You took us on a journey. I didn’t want it to stop at all… My favorite, has to be.”
Howard Stern said, “It’s very hard to get me emotional — you did,” going on to declare they “stole the show tonight, you are phenomenal talents and you’re definitely going through,”

How To Pick a Band For You Event

Do you need live music for your corporate event or convention? Whether it's rewarding employees or entertaining clients, each and every convention has a primary objective for the social event. It's important that the entertainment can work together with your business objectives.

So how do you pick great entertainment? These six tips will set you off on the right track.

1. CHECKING THE SONG LIST

First of all, check the band's song list. Most bands post a list of songs on their website but the question to ask yourself is "what am I looking for"? A good place to start is by organization of the song list. Does it make sense? How is it grouped, by artist, by genre, by decades? Is it focused on the band's original music? For most corporate events, original music is probably not what you have in mind. You're looking for a band that covers the popular genre(s) that appeal to your guests. It may be a blue-collar good time country music party which can include old and new country songs along with cajun and zydeco music, or it might be classy jazz for a sophisticated affair.

2. THEME OF THE EVENT

It may be that you're taking your corporate event to the next level and hosting an upper-end awards banquet that rewards top sales associates or divisions. In this case you may want Broadway style or Academy Award type theme music. Some companies will go even heavier down the "theme night" route (i.e. James Bond themed entertainment, Dixieland jazz band with a classic second line, etc.), which can be a fun way to make "just another convention" actually a pretty fun party. The point is matching the band to appropriate circumstances. You may want to consider a band that focuses on a wide variety of entertainment. These types of groups are known to play just about anything, anytime and anywhere.

3. CHECK THE VIDEO

After you've seen the song list and decided on the genre of the party, but what does the band look like? Or, what do they sound like? Check their photos and video pages of their website. Do they wear various costumes? Costumes is a term borrowed from the theatrical world, but in band lingo means a wide variety of things. Do they show up in boots to a black tie affair? Do they wear suits and long dresses, or do are they bluejeans/flannel/t-shirts to a formal event? There's nothing that says you can't mix and match these concepts in contemporary entertainment, but don't forget that 1) it's your decision, and 2) you should be aware of these variables as you book the entertainment.

4. THE MOOD AND ENERGY OF THE EVENING

Remember, the band is a major driver in the night's atmosphere. The band is often on stage all night, and will at some point have the focus of every event attendee (including co-workers and your boss) at some point throughout the evening. The band you choose will also invariably drive the energy of the evening, which is something else you can check out secretly in the videos. You'll want to watch for the general "feel" of the band, but also check out how the crowd is reacting to the band. Is this the one time each year when your company gets to let loose (Sue from accounting can dance all night, Joe from sales will of course get pulled up on stage, Chris will be orchestrating group line dances) or the only chance to have meaningful conversations outside the office (where Bob from the mail center can finally have that one-on-one conversation with the CEO)? It's your choice, but remember that the band makes all the difference!

5. CHECK REVIEWS AND PRESS CLIPPINGS

You're right, no body uses press clippings any more. What an archaic term that has become. But most bands also have their online equivalent called "comments" or "reviews." This is that peer review process that has come to work so well. Are they drawing good reviews on their website? How many followers do they have on Facebook? Are they on other social media sites? Do they have comments or subscribers on YouTube? This is not a tell all or end all decision maker for the band but it will offer you some guidance.

6. LOGISTICS AND DETAILS

Be sure to ask the band if they are flexible in terms of set up, break time, green room accommodations and most of all, volume levels. There's nothing worse than the band that won't turn down the volume while people are having dinner conversation. Conversely, your party can be a dud if the band can't take the evening to the next level once the crowd has finished dinner. That's the time you want to kick up your heels and dance the night away!

To review, use these points to pick great convention entertainment. Does the band have a portfolio that includes photos, video, audio, and song list? Do they have recommendations or reviews from recent customers? Do they seem like they can provide exactly what you're imagining in terms of dress, dance floor, and flexibility with logistics? If you take care of all of these points in the booking stage, you're guaranteed to have a party that will keep business flowing all year long. Good luck and have a great time!

The singer and West are both expected at the VMAs on Sunday, August 25 in Brooklyn.
It will be fun to see what Kanye will do next.

The New information reportedly that a member of the British military killed Princess Diana her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed and their driver Henri Paul. Scotland Yard is reviewing the new allegations.
The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that "the assessment of the new information isn't a re-investigation and won't fall under the Operation Paget—the inquiry into conspiracy theories surrounding their deaths." All the statements are from a former parents-in-law of a former soldier.
A jury concluded back in 2008 that the deaths of Princess Diana and Al Fayed were an "unlawful killing, grossly negligent driving of the following vehicles and of the Mercedes."
Buckingham Palace did not release a statement,  but police are checking the relevance and credibility of the information, Princess Diana, Al Fayed and Paul passed away after their Mercedes Benz crashed in a Paris tunnel in August 1997.
